I assembled my PC a few months back and didn’t have a clear idea of the optimal components, so I chose a Ryzen 5 3400G even though it came with a GPU, and the four cores aren’t sufficient. Now I’m learning more about the parts I have and am considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X, but I want to confirm compatibility with my MSI B450 Tomahawk Max motherboard. If anyone has any advice or insights, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
Ensure your BIOS is updated to version 1.1.0.0 or later to enable Ryzen 5000 support. For the best results, consider updating to version 1.2.0.0 as recommended. You can find the update instructions here: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/...#down-bios The motherboard already supports BIOS flashback, so you shouldn’t face issues during this process. If USB problems arise later, the beta BIOS might help, but it’s probably not necessary.
Also consider refreshing while the 3400G remains active. Flashback works well, though it appears issues arise if things aren't perfectly aligned. (CPU, RAM still connected)
It's fine to keep them active while updating. Whether the parts are present or not during the BIOS flashback update doesn't matter—what matters is that the motherboard gets power. Alternatively, you could simply apply the update directly in the BIOS without needing the components.
