So for my build I decided on the 10940x, but after two weeks of searching I can’t seem to find a trustworthy source to get one and all major providers seem to be out of stock. I was wondering if anyone here knows of or has found a 10940x listing, (box), sealed, for under $875 or if not, a 10980xe for $1075 or under. I appreciate the help! (Also I’m not going ryzen 9, don’t suggest it)
Consider choosing a Ryzen 3950X instead—it’s more affordable, offers additional cores, and boasts a higher core clock. You can also purchase it on Amazon. I’m also pretty sure they’re currently out of stock due to the coronavirus situation, and with reduced production, I’d expect it to remain unavailable for some time.
I litteraly just looked and the 10940x and 3950x have the same amount of lanes. both support 24 4.0 lanes and 48 3.0 lanes. so there is no reason not to go amd except personal preference. and the 3950x has a .1ghz higher max boost.
Most GPUs are built for 3.0, which means you’re likely limited to 24 lanes. Performance remains unchanged unless PCIe 4 support becomes available from chipmakers.
You can use 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes, with both processors sharing the same lane count. Because the 3950x is cheaper and offers better performance, I strongly suggest it. However, the 3950x benefits from a 7nm process, making it noticeably cooler.
Great! I'll check it out. I should note that Intel works better with my current setup, but I'm open to the 3950x. The 3960x might be worth considering if prices drop. Appreciate the clarification!
Exciting news for another Ryzen enthusiast! The 3950X isn't more powerful than the 10980XE, and the main concern lies elsewhere. The Cascade Lake X was just a paper announcement, and the real products aren't quite ready yet. It's one of the rarest CPUs aside from the 10900X. The 3950X offers 24 PCI-E 4.0 lanes while the 10980XE has 48 PCI-E 3.0 lanes—so the lane count isn't the same. If you're only doubling bandwidth, you're misunderstanding a lot of things. Although the 3950X has a slightly lower maximum boost, its higher IPC means its 4.7 GHz is actually faster than the 10980XE's 4.8 GHz in single-threaded performance. I've written about this before. Ryzen is great, but it doesn't fit every situation.
