Changing two Ryzen 3100 chips to 3700X?
Hello everyone, back in 2021 I set up two systems for the kids just before prices jumped. I managed to secure two B550 boards—MSI Tomahawk and Gaming+—believing they’d offer solid options for future CPU upgrades. Luckily, I did, and they performed really well. Each came with a Ryzen 3100, paired with 6GB 1060 graphics. Everything has been fine so far; these are excellent builds. The challenge now is deciding whether to upgrade the kids’ PCs from the 3100s to the newer 3700X models. Although the jump shouldn’t be huge, I’m considering a gradual transition to more powerful systems while still maximizing the potential of the B550s. Recently, I upgraded them from the 6GB 1060s to the 1070s as well. They handle CPU-heavy games better—my one with Minecraft and my other with sim racing. TL;DR: switch to a GTX 1070, keep the B550, and upgrade the Ryzen 3100s to the 3700X for better value and longevity. In my view, yes, it makes sense, but I’m still questioning if I’m overlooking something. I’ve been reading a lot about graphics cards and their performance details lately. Cheers! P.S.: I’ve been feeling a bit unwell, so this post might be a bit shaky.
The 3600 configuration would work, while the 3700x offers better multitasking if they choose. There’s a minor delay but it won’t be noticeable if they’re comfortable with 3100s now. You can still make good use of B550 boards since you’re still running 3000s. The 5000s remain available for future upgrades, and the top-tier 5000s will keep pace with today’s flagships—so there’s plenty to anticipate.
Even more impressive, 5600 remains quicker than a 3700x in both everyday use and gaming scenarios.
Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback. I was considering the 5000 series but prefer using what I already have. Of course, they might eventually need a 5xxx upgrade. I plan to test the 3700X to see how it performs. Are there any adjustments or updates I should make regarding drivers or chipset settings? None of these models support Ryzen Master features. Cheers!
