I'm trying to boost my FX 6300 with overdrive. It's currently at 3.8ghz after adjusting the voltage. I'm curious about the ideal voltage settings, what could happen if I go too high or too low. Thanks for asking this beginner question.

Read carefully through various overclocking guides, and they should provide a clear response to that query.

very low voltage won't start, going too high will damage the chip, and you'll need to wait over five minutes until the system stabilizes
