I currently own 16GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM, bought four years ago. I haven’t faced issues with games hitting 144 FPS on my monitor until now. My system includes a 2070 Super and an i7 4790K with 4 cores at 4.3 MHz. I’m trying to avoid big upgrades and want to know if adding more RAM is necessary. My motherboard (Z97 PC Mate) from 2016 seems to only support DDR3. What should I do?

It might be useful to switch to a newer motherboard, CPU, and DDR4 RAM. DDR3 is likely out of production, so upgrading those components would make sense. The board and CPU should also be replaced for optimal performance.

Current RAM options are mostly DDR4, but your processor isn't compatible. You'll need to replace the motherboard and CPU as well.

From my earlier tests, the variation isn't significant at that speed. It might slightly improve accuracy, but I’d also suggest saving the funds until you move to a DDR4 setup.

No DDR4-friendly boards exist for the 4790K; you'll also need a CPU upgrade.
