Hello, I’m planning to upgrade my RAM by adding two more sticks to the existing six-year-old system. I already have four sticks total, and I might also switch to a Ryzen 5950X while keeping the same motherboard. I’ll need to update the BIOS as well. My current PC has a powerful air cooler (Scythe Ninja 4), which seems to block at least one RAM slot. I’m worried it could affect the second slot too. I don’t know for sure yet—testing will be necessary.

The main challenge is that I expect issues with the RAM and might have to try different configurations, like mixing old and new sticks in various slots. I also doubt the 5950X will fit properly on my old board even after updating BIOS.

My biggest concern is safety: should I leave the CPU cooler completely off while testing? I’m not sure if it’s safe, but I think it’s better to avoid stress tests without it. If I can access BIOS without applying thermal paste, that would be ideal. Otherwise, I’d probably apply it during testing.

If I skip the thermal paste entirely, could I still run the system? I hope so, but I’m really hoping for a smooth experience.

Visit the manufacturer's website for your motherboard and check its specifications. It will indicate compatible CPUs, BIOS versions, and RAM requirements. Four slot setups may have restrictions. Ensure the cooler is active and securely installed. Thermal paste is affordable.

I usually just place an old Hyper 212 on top of a CPU for simple tests like BIOS or a fast boot. For longer sessions I use some inexpensive paste. When I really want to stress the CPU, I mount it properly.

That’s a solid plan. You should place it back on top of the CPU, just let it sit and gravity does the rest—no need to force anything. The setup was fine in that lying position too. Did you keep the old thermal paste on it during this process?

This way, at least there will be some thermal paste present. Once I identify a working RAM setup, I’ll remove the heatsink temporarily, clean both components, and then apply the new thermal paste.

Focus on paste for booting the OS, it works fine. No issues with high-watt components. I'm using equipment under 100W.
