I recently purchased an Intel core i5-12600k and wondered about the transition process since I’m using AMD now. I thought about following extra steps to adapt, especially keeping both drives from my existing AMD system—probably the one with Windows installed.

It's advised to reinstall Windows completely when switching platforms, even if you're using AMD or Intel. The operating system relies on many hidden settings and drivers specific to each platform, which can lead to unexpected performance or stability problems. Simply transferring the drive may resolve some issues, but it could also introduce new complications.

Alright, understood. The OS can function without installation in a "As Is" mode, though it’s typically necessary. Be prepared for an installation if needed. Linux tends to handle socket and chipset changes smoothly, so compatibility is usually maintained.

I received a direct upgrade from 2700X to 5800X3D on the same platform AM4 without reinstalling Windows or any apps. Outside the same socket generation, it isn’t possible. Switching from Intel to Intel might require a different operating system.

J2C provided guidance on post-assembly procedures for a PC a few years back. The instructions remain largely unchanged, only adapted for Windows 11, as the E-core CPU wouldn’t function well under Windows 10.

Install USB setup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...c3b507420d Backup everything you wish to keep. Insert the USB into your computer, adjust the BIOS settings to prioritize the USB drive, and proceed with the installation instructions. When prompted about the disk partition, remove all existing partitions until only one continuous drive remains before starting the install.

When setting up a new installation, link only the drive you intend for Windows, ensuring you avoid mixing drives. Make sure your motherboard's BIOS is current before installing Windows. If you're having issues updating the BIOS on an Intel system this weekend, that could be the cause.

Create a backup of your drive, transfer it to the new PC, and test if it starts up. You don’t need to reinstall Windows unless you notice any problems. If it boots smoothly and functions as expected, there’s no need for a fresh installation.
