I'm using a Dell Inspiron 5570 and it's acting up with several issues. I'm thinking about overclocking to see how much performance I can boost, but I don't want it to become a hot mess. I'm also hoping to get a better cooling solution for my laptop.

Modifying BIOS carries significant danger of damaging your system unless you're fully prepared. It's safer to use tools like throttlestop instead of attempting a modded BIOS.

In line with Ben’s comments, consider using Throttlestop. If it doesn’t significantly impact performance, then it’s over. This approach won’t help unless the machine throttles due to heat (not power, boost current, or time limits), and it has extra cooling capacity internally—meaning the laptop pads that support the stock fans are likely sufficient. Typically, laptops are constrained by the size of their internal finstacks; beyond that, you’d need a much higher RPM delta to make a difference.

This laptop won’t allow overclocking and if you attempt it, the maximum speed will probably be around 105 bclk. Overclocking the clock speed on laptops is risky and not recommended. There’s limited information online about adjusting BIOS clocks, but it seems challenging. Damaging the hardware through software or BIOS changes is generally not advised—most users rely on testing tools like a test clip or desoldering to reset the system. Rewriting BIOS settings can be complex and may brick the device if not done carefully. Modifying BIOS is usually simpler through straightforward BIOS updates or module swaps, which are easier to manage. In short, the safest approach is to stop power limits rather than risk hardware damage.
