It's feasible to restrict microphone access for individual desktop apps on Windows. While system settings let you enable or disable it globally, some software offers finer control, like a microphone firewall. This way you can manage access per application without constant changes.

i think first we need to figure out why there's so much stuff showing up... for me there's literally nothing (and i do have things like skype, audacity etc installed) also, have you tried unplugging your microphone and only plug it in when you actually need it?

Well, this seems a bit odd. Are you using a specific microphone or headset, or is it connected through the webcam? I noticed on the Logitech webcam I turned off the microphone in the settings, and it doesn’t show up even to the device manager. Try turning off the microphone for desktop applications in settings, then test with Skype to see if it works. I also have a USB microphone and a webcam that has the mic disabled. There’s a MuteMe USB button that actually detects when the mic is active—this helped me figure out Snagit trying to use it at startup, even without recording. That means the issue isn’t with the microphone itself. I just need to be careful about which apps can access the mic. I’d like to disable microphone access for programs that have audio features but aren’t used, such as the audio chat in TeamViewer. By the way, I found a setting for “Voicd Activation” that I never selected and didn’t enable, yet it was still active.
