Change Between Machines
Change Between Machines
I’m looking for a simple and affordable solution ($100 or less) to switch between my home and work computers.
Remote software works well when internet is slow, but it slows down during business hours.
I’d like a laptop with good RAM and storage, but that’s beyond our budget.
I was thinking of using an external hard drive to carry files back and forth, plugging it in when needed.
I don’t want to remember saving files each time I switch computers, especially since my work is fast-paced and interruptions are common.
Having a single device—like a laptop or monitor with keyboard—would be ideal.
Is there an option like this available?
Thanks in advance.
Hardware itself isn't the core issue; it's about establishing proper workflows. Data files needed for home use are automatically copied to the external drive when you leave work, and again when returning from home. It's also important to prevent older versions of files from being overwritten by newer ones. The setup should involve basic backups to ensure reliability. You can utilize backup software, DOS, or PowerShell to manage these tasks.
I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in, but it seems a bit casual.
Transfer all your personal browsing to one dedicated browser (like Edge). Ensure device history or similar features are enabled so your login and site preferences stay consistent.
Switch to a different browser for professional tasks (such as Google for work) and keep your work activities synchronized.
For storage, rely on services like Dropbox, Drive, or OneDrive so you can access files from any device.
This approach has been effective for me over the past few years. The main challenge is learning to avoid accidentally entering personal details in the work browser.
So you think my browser suggestion is helpful for part of the issue. I hadn't considered bookmarks or similar aspects, but that's still relevant, and your thought is good!
The main challenge is handling files. It would be better if we could access them instantly and edit them on a computer—especially when internet is slow or unavailable. Keeping track of saving or transferring them would be risky, particularly with the interruptions I face (and my memory doesn't help much! 😉).
I understand there might not be a cheap solution, but I just wanted to confirm I thought it through before giving up on this idea.
Thanks!
The issue isn't with the hardware itself, but with organizing the necessary processes. Data files should be transferred to the external drive automatically when you leave work and again when returning home. It's also important to prevent older versions of files from being overwritten by newer ones. Basic backups along the way are recommended as a precaution. Tools like backup software, DOS, or PowerShell can handle copying files, though moving files is riskier. Task Scheduler could be used for automation. Dropbox now offers an option to store files both in the cloud and locally, along with a backup. This feature is called selective sync. It aims to save space and is useful for users with mobile devices or laptops. If the internet fails, you can still save your work and it will sync back to the cloud. The drawback is that it can slow down collaboration, as changes must be completed by one person before others can access the updated version.
btw, I saw that choosing the best answer would close the thread, but it's still allowing me to contribute. I'm not sure how to close it, so if that's what you're asking about, just let me know how. Thanks again!
