Challenges in Modernizing Older Prebuilt Systems
Hello everyone, I own two ASUS G11DF prebuilt systems that I’ve upgraded affordably whenever possible. Both currently run with these specs: CPU = AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (swapped from the original Ryzen 5 1400), GPU = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (original model), RAM = two 8GB DDR4 sticks, GSkill, PSU = TUF Gaming 750W Gold (replaced the old Chacony 500W), and motherboard with B350 chipset and no built-in graphics or display ports. The BIOS is up to date to version 0903 from ASUS, though it’s quite outdated.
Initially, I thought upgrading would be limited by the motherboard’s age and capabilities. Then I found two XFX SWFT 210 RX 6600 graphics cards at a good price and tested them. My expectation was they’d work, but I’m noticing no display output—only power-up indicators light up for peripherals. Swapping the GTX 1060 back resolved the issue. Both RX 6600 models didn’t function properly with these systems.
I’ve tried various troubleshooting steps: using different cables and ports, removing NVIDIA drivers, adjusting BIOS settings, and even considering a PSU upgrade. I’ve also looked into whether firmware updates or a new motherboard could help. My main worry is that the motherboard or its firmware might be the root cause, possibly making it impossible to get the RX 6600 to work.
If replacing the board is an option, would it be feasible to find one compatible with my current CPU and the RX 6600? If neither is viable, I’d likely have to sell the graphics cards. Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Is there any doubt about its functionality? It was verified on a different platform where it successfully started.
I'll review them in the updated system shortly, though it may take a day or two before I'm able to access them.
The rx6600s should function on any motherboard with a PCI-e port. It's improbable you received two faulty graphics cards simultaneously. You might want to uninstall Nvidia drivers using DDU, and if that doesn't help, consider erasing your boot drive and installing Windows from scratch. This approach isn't strictly necessary but often resolves the issue for me. Good luck!
Some older models aren't compatible with the latest GPUs, though there are alternatives available.
