I'm using Windows 8.1 on my school laptop and considering switching to Windows 10. Linus's video suggests performance gains might be minimal. Is it worth the change? The main reasons could be updates, new features, or better compatibility. Regarding your second question, a clean install replaces everything, while an upgrade modifies the current version without removing all data.

It makes sense to upgrade within the year since it's free. You don't need to do it right now. Windows 8 remains a solid operating system. 2: Upgrading simply preserves your existing data while replacing most of the Windows 8 components with Windows 10. A fresh installation would erase everything on your boot drive, removing all current files and installing Windows 10 completely anew.

Suggest a wait of a few months until all significant issues are resolved. It wouldn't be worthwhile if you're currently at version 8.1. The key distinction between an upgrade and a clean install is that the upgrade retains all your previous Windows files, creating a folder like "windows.old" or similar.

Performance variations aren't the sole factor. Gaming speed remains consistent across Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. If you're not using a gaming rig, performance concerns are minimal. In my view, Windows 10 offers significant improvements in usability, reviving many of the strengths of Windows 7. A fresh installation clears your drive and sets up a brand-new Windows version. You must safeguard your data before proceeding. An upgrade preserves existing apps and files, adds Windows 10, and relocates your old Windows folder to a dedicated "Windows.old" directory on C:\. Ensure you have the necessary drivers for Windows 10 before starting the upgrade. If you opt for the upgrade, remove all major Windows 8.1 device drivers and reinstall fully compatible Windows 10 versions.

Latest is always worth. Windows 10 is amazingly awesome imo. I don't think there is any performance increase b/w Win 7 and Win 8. So it's just UI update. Although there are some good things in Windows 10. I love Windows 10 totally. Install it, have latest.. Upgrade means you are updating the Windows 10 within Windows 8.1 OS. It'll overwrite the Windows 8 OS. Clean install means completely formatting your HDD and installing the OS.

I agree, but I've faced problems with Windows 10. The driver support is poor, and some of my games aren't working correctly.

Find a way to save your data using a USB drive. You don’t need the CD-ROM device on your laptop or gaming computer.

It’s best to avoid keeping all your crucial files on a single location like C:\. A fresh installation would erase everything there. Store copies elsewhere—USB drives, external hard disks, or different internal drives. You don’t need to back up your programs because you can reinstall them later. What matters are items you want to retain, such as photos, music libraries, or documents like Word, Excel, or Adobe files that can’t be replaced. Upgrading to version 10 is an option to preserve your data, but having backups remains wise.
