CentOS assistance
I’m moving away from windows and looking for the top distro to switch to. My main goals are running Davanci Resolve, which only works with CentOS and REHL, playing games using Proton, and editing with GIMP. I’ve used CentOS on my VPSes in server mode without a desktop environment, so I’m checking how it handles kernel updates, GPU drivers, and other features. Thanks!
You don’t mind any particular aspects of Ubuntu, and installing Resolv requires a few extra steps. Check out some tutorials for more details.
Centos has an older release cycle, making it simpler to use Fedora, which was just updated a week ago. Fedora comes after RHEL/CENTOS, so you may find more assistance available.
CentOS remains a solid choice due to its long-term support and stability, making it ideal for servers. Although it’s quite old, it still receives significant backing. For everyday PCs or desktops, Ubuntu-based distributions often provide better options.
CentOS isn't designed primarily for desktop use... DaVinci Resolve functions on Fedora as well and can be set up in Ubuntu and other distributions with some adjustments. Still, CentOS 8 is quite close to what I understand, and it should benefit from a newer kernel and user environment.
It's comparable to RHEL but better suited for robust workstations. Fedora's focus on workstations also brings newer releases. CENTOS 8 relies on Fedora 28, making Fedora 30 a solid choice if you prioritize gaming.
