When purchasing a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Ryzen CPU, ensure you're using a motherboard that supports those generations. Many AM4+ boards claim compatibility with Gen 2 or Gen 3, but often require a BIOS upgrade. Updating the BIOS typically needs a Gen 1 compatible chip to make the board work with Gen 2. A friend recently faced difficulties because the motherboard he bought came pre-installed with outdated BIOS, forcing him to disassemble it. He discovered this by checking product reviews online. This situation highlights the importance of verifying compatibility through reviews and board inspections before buying. For better results, consider using a Gen 1 chip or opt for a more reliable board to avoid such issues. This advice is especially useful for those on a tighter budget, as it helps prevent unnecessary frustration and costly mistakes.

The issue is boards lacking firmware updates might remain in storage facilities. It's not feasible for the maker to recall every motherboard with outdated firmware just to fix it. Sometimes, deploying a newer firmware can be undesirable because certain updates exclude support for specific processors. My B450M Mortar no longer works with any of the lower-end CPUs. Of course, it's not about me using an Athlon 200, but others might need a B450 board paired with a lower-end processor. Additionally, once AM4 boards are upgraded to a particular firmware version, reverting changes isn't possible. I consider this unacceptable, particularly since MSI appeared to have versions that didn't perform well.

You should take it to a tech store—they’ll probably fix it for free or give you a boot kit from AMD. I don’t understand the issue.

Many of these models can be enhanced later to work with newer generations. The provided BIOS is the standard for the delivered chipsets. 300-series boards (X370, B350, A320) only support the first-gen 400 series (X470, B450). Second-gen and first-gen 500 series (X570, B550) are fully compatible. Third-gen and earlier support is also included. Important notes: MSI 400 series "MAX" boards come with a BIOS ready for third-gen chips. Any board with BIOS Flashback can be updated to a compatible version, making it simple to upgrade for third-gen Ryzen processors.

They just back them up for those CPUs, but that doesn't guarantee compatibility. If you only have the latest CPU and need the older one to install something, it won't work.

We discovered other makers that provide the same service, not only MSI. It's frustrating to have to navigate through these obstacles just to get something that should be straightforward.

they come with the proper bios, designed specifically for those cpus. i own a x470 and a ryzen 3600, so you’d need an update for that.

The items in my list are the compatible ones available for shipment. A B350 board comes with 1st generation support from the start and can be upgraded to accommodate 1st 2nd and 3rd generation.

Mira Yurizaki has clearly explained the issue. Should AMD and Intel restrict the boards to focus on a single generation?
