Cat 5
Cat 5
For new Ethernet cables, Cat 6 or better is recommended. You currently have some Cat 5 cables, so I’m curious about their maximum performance. I heard Cat 5 cables can handle up to 100Mbps, but they might also work at higher speeds. Are others using such cables and achieving smooth speeds without issues?
CAT 5 isn't dependable for stable Gigabit speeds; 5e is the best option to go for. It makes no sense to use anything below CAT 6 now, particularly when running cables through walls. The price difference between 6 and 5e isn't huge, but if you're using 5e in a home setup, it should work just fine.
I can purchase CAT 5e or CAT 6 cables, but the ones I'm considering are brand new without labels. I'm planning to test them over short distances from the modem/router to connected devices. The current internet connection uses a CAT 5e UTP external cable.
