Hey there, yesterday the monitors stopped working and after restarting the machine the SMD cap on the 5mOhm sensing resistor failed. I cleaned the area and replaced the bad capacitor, but I’m not sure how to get the exact value or if it’s safe to solder a new one without special PCB tools. The exposed copper seems connected to a power plane (possibly a +12 or +5V plane) and the other side of the blown cap is touching ground—probably a filtering capacitor behind the sensing resistor. I assume there are no other shorts. Should I skip one of the caps? It might be a big deal if there’s nothing else connected. I don’t know why this happened and think my PSU isn’t the problem, since I didn’t buy a cheap unit. Any advice would be great!

Unfortunately, the pads are missing and soldering wasn’t straightforward—some copper melted significantly, though it didn’t reach the following layer. There’s a second cap at the top, but my basic multimeter reading shows no short circuit, even with melted copper nearby.

I don’t have access to that equipment. I removed the residue using a vintage toothbrush to eliminate the charred material.

Resolved; eliminated the burnt tops, sanitized the space, and plan to apply an insulating material—GPU functions properly and we’ll reduce clock speed for safety. Thank you all!
