While using Blender I noticed a pop and a burning odor. The computer kept running smoothly, so I could turn it off myself. Was this due to a faulty PSU or perhaps the weak double MOLOX 6-pin connector? I have a Ryzen 5 3600 with an Intel 1080 Ti and a B450M motherboard. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It's clearly not a good power supply unit in any way. Definitely not. However, it could be the reason, maybe someone else can confirm that.

It appears the device was operating alongside another capacitor nearby. If either fails, the system should keep functioning. This second capacitor appears to regulate power for the PCIe connections according to the traces. Essentially, the board will work properly without it. I’m unlikely the power supply unit was responsible, but the situation remains extremely frustrating. For a 1080, connecting Molex to a 6-pin PSU on a budget unit is highly risky.

your power supply only supports 384 W on the 12 V rail, which isn’t sufficient for the 1080Ti and 3600W units. The capacitors are mainly for filtering, so missing one isn’t a huge issue but could cause instability. I recommend upgrading to a better PSU and possibly replacing that capacitor, though it might not be essential if you have a solid one.

It was during some tough times, but switching to a better PSU might help things stabilize.

Absolutely, a fresh power supply would be a great idea.

Could the GPU be responsible? It showed some spiking performance just before the capacitor failed. Probably I need to replace the PSU.

I get it, the core concept is clear but the specifics feel a bit unclear.

Oh, maybe you can advise some psu for this situation? I know that there is a tier list but... It's not really helpful with such an amount of choices

It depends on your budget. How much money do you have and where are you living?
