I had an Asus ROG notebook that suddenly crashed and went into Windows "Preparing Automatic Repair." It stuck there forever. So I thought something was wrong with the operating system and decided to reformat or reinstall it. I tried to boot using a confirmed working Win 10 x64 USB, but when I set it as my first boot device in the BIOS, it just hangs on the ROG splash screen. If I try launching the USB directly from the BIOS instead of changing the boot order, it goes to the Windows logo and then gets stuck there too. That's weird. Here is what I've tried so far: Reset the BIOS to default settings, physically install a brand new SSD and try again to reinstall the OS, same result. Tried to boot into Linux (Ubuntu), got to the screen where it asks how I want to run Ubuntu, selected "try without installing," went to a blank screen and stuck there. Went back into BIOS and disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot. Removed and cleaned my RAM module (1 x 8GB). Tried using Win 8.1 just for fun, same result. Is the motherboard broken? Maybe it's the BIOS? I am hoping someone can suggest a BIOS setting tweak... Thanks!

I got stuck trying to put this new hard drive into my PC. Nothing worked, not even when I tried running the Windows update on a flash drive. Same thing happens with Linux too. The computer won't start up at all.

To fix a small pot, turn off power and try using a USB drive instead of the hard drive. If that doesn't work, just toggle the CMOS battery back and forth to reset things. Try again and let me know what happens.

I'm still getting stuck at the very first step, even when I put in the extra software drive. What is that special setting called "CSM"?

Compatibility Support Module. Perhaps your computer says it's in Legacy Mode now.

Okay. So the CSM setting was turned off. When I tried to run the installation disk on top of a raw SSD, Windows came up, showed that spinning circle logo thing, but after waiting about fifteen minutes it still isn't really starting.

I'm assuming just for testing, so connecting a real hard drive isn't needed. You probably need a small flash stick to start up properly, which means keeping only the bare essentials plugged in.

It's exactly like having a disk or not having one. Just plug in a USB drive, and it works just as well.

You're sure this flash stick works on a different computer, right? Can you unplug something else to check it out? Did you try putting it in other USB holes?
