Hello, I just finished assembling a computer. It’s been quite a challenge. I’m not sure if it was my mistake or the process itself, but I had to remove the motherboard and reshape a pin for the JUSB3 socket. After connecting everything and applying thermal paste, I realized I ran out of paste. I went to a local store and bought a tube for $25, which turned out to be worth it since I needed it for the heatsink. Once everything was fixed, I tried booting up but got a PEI error—specifically a yellow light meaning “DRAM not detected.” There were also memory initialization issues around 25-28. After rechecking, I made sure all connections were secure and tried again. This time the white light appeared, indicating the GPU wasn’t found (“VGA”). There was also a static error reading 1A, which points to a pre-memory PCH initialization problem. My question is whether this board requires a BIOS update for the 13th generation processor. I’m really confused and would appreciate some advice. I’ve been working with computers for 16 years, trying to stay precise and methodical, but time is tight. Please help me, but I don’t want to rush. I have an MSI Z790 carbon board with a 13700k CPU, two 32GB GSKILL sticks (total 64GB), 6400mhz RAM, and a 4080 GPU.

PEI mistakes usually stem from a memory problem, something you're likely familiar with. For BIOS updates, they could be useful if your board was idle for some time and then refreshed.

Use one stick of RAM in the first slot and ensure it's properly seated. If you have a compatible older CPU, test it on the board and check for BIOS updates. If successful, flash the new BIOS and attempt the purchase again.

I don’t have another CPU, and I’m moving from a 5820. Updating the BIOS without posting is tricky—most guides need you to select a boot device. You might need to check if your system supports remote updates or use a USB drive with the latest BIOS file.

Review your guide—it mentions a BIOS flashback option and setup steps. Once you’re in the desktop environment, you can obtain the newest BIOS files on a USB drive with a 32-bit format and plug it into the PC’s USB port. Your device will support updating via FRAM from the server, which is common now. I usually save the downloads for safety, just in case any issues arise during the update process.

Bios updates resolved the problem. It seems the "-Improve memory compatibility" fix worked.

Oh... great update. Your PC is running smoothly now. I believe your idea is on the right track... new technology may have some early issues, but your setup is finally stable.
