I have a Toshiba Satellite C780-11H laptop from 2012, running Windows 7 with service pack 1 and it is a 64-bit system. When the laptop was brand new, the webcam got infected by ransomware almost right away, which made me really worried. After I did a factory reset, I noticed the camera would keep trying to start up. I wasn't sure how that happened, maybe in the task manager, but since the ransomware scare, it was scary enough that I eventually uninstalled it. Now I need to use my computer again. When I tried opening the webcam app, I got a message saying "Web camera initialization failed. Please check your camera device and restart application or computer." I looked in the Device Manager for imaging devices but there are none listed. I also tried finding drivers online with no luck. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

Check if "View" says "Show hidden device selected".

Hi, thanks for getting back to me! Yes, that hidden option was checked. But when I try opening the Web Camera App, it still says an error message. If you check Task Manager under Processes, you can see TWebCamera.exe running and then stopping right after the app closes. In Device Manager, under Network Adaptors, there is a "Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface" with a yellow warning icon and this specific error: "This device cannot start (Code 10)." I don't remember seeing that before. I'm not sure if it's connected to the webcam at all.

So long as it was brand new, the webcam got infected with ransomware almost immediately. How did we find out about this or learn of it before? Do you see any symptoms? I just looked on Google and found these links: https://www.minitool.com/news/teredo-tun...rface.html Are you able to turn off IPv6 on your network? I'm not sure if that's the fix, but those error messages make me think IPv6 might be involved even if it isn't the main culprit.

The ransomware locked my screen on a message that looked like it was from the police. It had a picture of me taken with my webcam, and words saying something about having to pay a fine to release the computer, avoid being prosecuted, etc. I tried the usual things like ctrl-alt-del, but the only way I could release it was by holding down the power button to turn it off. I think I used an old machine to look for solutions and probably ended up doing a safe start and then factory reset. Thanks for the link. I don't know anything about the registry but I have followed instructions successfully before. My "network" is just this laptop and the router. I've found the "Manage Wireless Networks" window, and under "Adaptor properties" I can see Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), which is ticked. I could presumably untick this. Alternatively I followed the regedit steps in your link and got as far as "Step 4: Change the Value data to 0 and click OK to save changes", but I'm not sure how to change it. Presumably I could delete Disabled Components and then recreate it as shown in this link: https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-ti...windows-7/ I have created a restore point, but I'm a bit cautious about changing things I don't understand, so I thought I'd check with you first before trying anything. Which option do you think I should try first? Incidentally I had a look in Program Files (x86) and found the TOSHIBA Web Camera Application folder with a load of files in it, so at least I didn't delete them.

For now, just uncheck IPv6. Don't touch the registry unless it's really needed. I forgot to mention this before - sorry! I am wondering about the Toshiba app folder: are there any .exe or .ini files? Can you give me a picture of what is inside? Do you have antivirus or malware software that can check those items?

I removed my IPv6 settings. I checked the Toshiba Webcam folder with Avira and found no viruses. I also used Malwarebytes Pro in its free trial version before this, and those scans were always clean. Here is a picture of that folder: https://twitter.com/x/status/1683778885404569600 View it here: https://twitter.com/Rids85788259/status/...5404569600 Someone sent me a link with the driver for my laptop camera. The driver is called Toshiba Webcam driver and its version is 2.0.3.3, it weighs about 86 MB in size, and its name is webcam-20120510133108.zip. I downloaded this from the Dynabook website because I thought they were the official support for Toshiba. When I double-clicked the file, it looked like it was installing some things. Then I tried to start the web cam app and also tried restarting my laptop and starting the webcam again but still it didn't work. Here are the links: Toshiba Satellite C870-11H drivers for Windows 7 64 bit Toshiba Satellite C870-11H drivers download for windows 7 64bit version, windows 7 drivers free download for Toshiba Satellite Notebook, Toshiba Satellite drivers free download www.downloadlaptopdrivers.net Drivers & Software Support | Dynabook The Official Dynabook Support Website provides downloads and support for drivers, software, and other updates for your Dynabook product. support.dynabook.com This is what I actually downloaded:

Quick update - I finally made the camera show up in Device Manager. It's a Lexmark X422, but it still won't turn on with the same error message. I ran the Windows 7 fix tool and it found the issue but couldn't solve it. Now I'm going to try some other steps like updating drivers again.

Hey Ralston. I just need to tell you that I couldn't make it work yet, so because of my upcoming conference call this week, I grabbed a USB webcam instead. Thanks for listening! Cheers.
