Can't find my hard drive!
I saw an old Intel Optane drive in my closet, so I put it in the empty socket and checked if anything happened. Nothing changed.
I checked this and the computer just shows an error saying no boot device is found when it tries to start up. But if I turn off the laptop, it comes back in Windows every time I plug it back in.
Sounds like fast startup turned on then. If so, the PC is basically off except when you restart. On a normal start with fast startup on, the computer doesn't actually shut down; it just wakes from hibernation instead of loading all devices fresh. The PC isn't too happy if it has to turn everything fully off and start over. Just check if that's on - https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189...-10-a.html (don't turn it off unless you want the error every time it starts). It's not really a driver issue, more of a "fresh start" problem. And it's the drive each time. I've seen this before where it boots fine until you restart. I already suggested CMOS. Maybe there is a power fault on the motherboard. Curious, is Secure boot on? Can you right-click Start, choose Disk Management, expand the next window to show details of the top and bottom area, take a screenshot, upload it to an image sharing site, and share the link? Wonder if it starts up in a wrong boot method and restart fixes everything?
Earlier, you said there were options like 0 seconds, 5 seconds, or 10 seconds for a delayed start. I tested every single one of those settings and the problem is still there. I also tried turning off Secore's boot command and restarting it without any luck. Honestly, I think this might be a bad motherboard thing. But since I don't use this laptop anymore, I'm just thinking about giving it to my family member instead. They'll probably get a new one or maybe even replace the board if needed. For now, I'll just say something like "it won't turn on right away" when they try using it.
How does it go just with running windows updates? You need to restart when you do that. Just wondering how things will look on the next update for Windows, because more restarts might be needed there too. Is this already on Win 11 version 22H2 right now since there won't be a new one coming out for about a year? Fast startup is in Windows and not in the BIOS setting. There are two functions with similar names, but the one in Windows isn't exactly the same as the BIOS one.
Hey again, just wanted to check: I turned on "Fast Startup" in Power settings and tried turning it off and back on. I also updated to the newest Windows 11 update. Still happens when you restart, even if you do a quick restart for updates.
It seems like the motherboard is broken. Every second Tuesday of the month will cause a crash. The PC restarts and cannot find the right disk. What happens on the next boot? Does it just keep trying to load updates? I can see Windows getting corrupted at some point. It isn't Windows that is causing this; it's the laptop itself. Windows has no control over finding the correct drive each time you start up.
I have had EXACTLY the same problem with an HP OMEN 15. Sometimes, I would get a message saying my boot device wasn't found, but when I rebooted and tried again, everything worked fine... or so I thought. Yesterday, I got that same error, rebooted, and nothing happened yet. It keeps happening over and over. Now, the computer won't start at all.
I used Hiren's tool to check around, and the boot SSD isn't there (physically, nothing has changed). It doesn't show up in the BIOS, and HP system diagnostics say that the hard drive is not installed. I managed to update the BIOS through Hiren and the official website, but it didn't help.
I think this problem started only when I updated to Windows 11, but to be honest, I can't really tell for sure about that. I've done all the steps in the BIOS that the other person mentioned. I am gutted. The machine is two years old and ran really well before. Any suggestions?
