Can't access dual channel memory, is this a compatibility problem or something else? 3600Mhz
Hello, I’m seeking a second viewpoint on this. Does the Sided = Single, Side = 8GB configuration indicate that the RAM isn’t fully compatible because it doesn’t specify a 16GB size? The confusion lies in the DIMM labeling—specifically, the 1 | 2 | 4 DIMM setup where the first and second slots are verified. Or perhaps it suggests a 4x2 dual channel configuration? I’ll share the details below the screenshots.
The issue involves the Ryzen 5 3600 MSI B450 Tomahawk Max (latest BIOS version). According to the compatibility guide, you can search for the RAM SKU model listed.
Additionally, the Corsair Vengeance Pro 3600mhz (CL 18-22-22-42) supports XMP profiles 1 or 2. You can use MSI’s Memory Try It in Bios or Manual OC settings to set the RAM to 3600Mhz. However, this approach doesn’t always succeed. Running a memory test consistently fails.
The puzzling part is that when testing the RAM individually—just one module with 3600Mhz enabled in the BIOS—it passes every time. This raises the suspicion of a compatibility problem. On MSI’s website, some boards list RAM with Sided = Dual and show a 16GB capacity, but only after three checks.
It seems unlikely to be a hardware defect since the setup works when using just one 8GB module at 3600Mhz. Both units function correctly under those conditions.
Are you certain the RAM is installed in the proper dual-channel slots?
Yup, forgot to elaborate that part. It works 8x2 = 16GB even if I go into windows. The problem is when I do a memtest it always fails when it's on 3600Mhz. Usually if it's just wrong slots, there will be a message that you it's not optimized or something right? BTW, was using a 2666Mhz 8x2 before and that was working fine so pretty sure it's the rights dimm slots
The QVL uses Single and Dual to describe the DIMM positions, not the channel count. The GB value indicates the DIMM size, and the checkboxes show how many were confirmed valid. For instance, 8GB with three checkboxes means all combinations of 1x8, 2x8, and 4x8 were validated.
Are you confirming the exact same motherboard, CPU, and RAM? The one you linked above seems to be a good match. If it works for you, the issue might be with the other unit. The test should pass with dual-channel 8x2 3600Mhz RAM. Your current setup functions, but the memory test keeps failing.
It has been confirmed by MSI to function at 2x8 3600Mhz CL18, though this doesn't ensure stability across all configurations. The final performance depends on your specific 3600's IMC. Share a screenshot of the CPU-Z Memory section if you encounter issues with XMP settings. You may gradually adjust timings until passing memtest86 without errors.
