When I hover over the icon it displays "search". I believe it was meant for an email client I previously used and now removed. Clicking right doesn't do anything. The icon isn't shown in the taskbar options.

Try a clean boot and observe any changes – follow the guidelines carefully. Ensure no Microsoft services are disabled or Windows won’t load properly. This method doesn’t remove files, just halts non-Microsoft programs during startup. If it resolves the issue, it likely points to a startup program. Over several restarts, restart the stopped applications to pinpoint the culprit. You might also consider checking for leftover items with the provided command line tool for Mailbird.

Thank you... nothing I've attempted appears to resolve the problem.

Click Start and Run, then paste this in:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
It will create a folder. Do you notice the Search icon there? If yes, remove it (keep it in Recycle Bin for a few days) and restart Windows Explorer.
