I haven’t owned an iPhone since the 4s I got rid of back in 2014. My only Apple gadget is the original iPad Pro, which I mainly used for reading ebooks over the years. It was mostly idle in airplane mode for about 90% of its time. I handed it over to my daughter a few weeks ago after her tablet failed and we couldn’t afford another one. A text from my mom just popped up on her tablet via iMessage, but it didn’t reach my phone. I attempted the deregister page Apple offers, but kept seeing “This phone number isn’t registered.” I can’t find help online, and I’m not going to wait for a call to manage everything. Should I head to the nearest Apple store and get frustrated in person until they fix it? I really don’t remember ever signing up for iMessage, and it feels like a serious privacy issue—messages are being blocked and sent to a device that’s been offline for most of the last six years.

Access the contact details and switch from iPhone to mobile version on the sender's device.

I’ve already tried, but it’s frustrating knowing I didn’t agree. Now Apple seems to be choosing which devices receive messages, and there’s no simple way to opt out.

The issue arises because the iPhone was previously linked to a contact on the sender’s device. It needs to be updated. As long as you still have an iPad connected to that number or address, it should continue functioning without sending SMS.
