In short, you mainly need a fresh CPU and motherboard. If you don’t mind not having the newest parts, you can still build a solid setup for less than $200.

The issue lies with the combination of these processors; unless 4K resolution is needed, it works fine for 1440p.

I didn't mention he had a terrible computer.
But the issue I was discussing was about choosing a different VR set instead of getting a 1k one, allowing him to upgrade his PC at a lower cost.
I was just suggesting he only needed a new CPU and motherboard, not a full rebuild that would cost him the $1k he thought.

A more affordable VR setup would be perfect, though I'm letting him know he doesn't have to upgrade his PC. He doesn't need a new CPU. I'm not sure about his motherboard, but I have a basic B150 which seems to work just fine, as does the i5 and 1070. Also, it handles VR games without any issues.
