I’m starting to plan my new system. The last one I made was a 4690K I5 with 16GB RAM. For the next build I’m considering an MSI MOBO, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the extra cost. I saw positive reviews and it’s reasonably priced at $1200 on Newegg. I’m also wondering if this MOBO is better than another one for $300 that I heard could help with overclocking. I’ll need to keep the RAM at 6000 CL30, so I’m looking into what this MOBO offers compared to alternatives. Any advice would be appreciated.

It depends on the performance you need. I consider the 5080 quite expensive and hard to suggest compared to the 9070xt and 5070ti. I’d steer clear of the asrock with 9800x3d due to failure reports. The 6000CL30 works well with any Zen CPU. I only suggest the 9800x3d for lower resolutions since the gap narrows at higher resolutions. Overlocking won’t make much difference on that CPU. The X870 tomahawk is a solid motherboard option.

I thought the 5080 surpasses both by a big gap?
Why won’t the CPU overclock much? Isn’t that its intended purpose?
What do you mean 9800x3d for lower resolutions?
I’ll check the tomahawk but why this one?
In short, I want to play games with high frame rates and avoid getting stuck in this performance struggle bus I’ve been on over the past few years.

The 5080 offers around 10-15 percent improvement over the 5070ti, making it almost unnoticeable. X3d processors include stacked cache, which restricts voltage before overheating occurs. Overclocking potential is limited and not very practical. The 9800x3d remains the top gaming CPU, especially at 1080p, though as resolution rises, the GPU often becomes the limiting factor rather than the CPU. The X870 tomahawk is frequently suggested due to its strong feature set; however, its value diminishes significantly after the $300 mark, and motherboard performance usually stays relatively stable.

What resolution are you playing at and will you be using any storage again?

Thanks for the input. I’m not sure what kind of performance I should aim for. I’ve been having trouble getting my rig to run smoothly for years, and while 4k is nice, it’s not essential. What I really want is more frames per second so I can compete in games instead of being overwhelmed by poor performance.

I play a variety of games such as Rust, Dune Awakenings, Battlefield, and survival titles.
I’m currently leaning toward the 5070 Ti and am using an LG C3 48".
