Can you increase the clock speed of your Pentium 4 519K on a pre-built motherboard?
Can you increase the clock speed of your Pentium 4 519K on a pre-built motherboard?
I'm attempting to boost the performance of my Pentium 4 because it runs so slowly. It's the only desktop I own, and I'm also trying it for the first time since I bought it 14 years ago. I'm curious if there are any multipliers or settings on the motherboard that could help. Since it's a K processor, I hope it can be overclocked properly, or was it different back then? Also, my current cooling solution only reaches 63°C under load, but the CPU maxes out at 67°C.
Hi
It's not worth attempting to overclock this Pentium 4 on that motherboard.
If the BIOS doesn't support overclocking, it won't function properly.
The CPU model will display the exact version, as well as the socket type (LGA775).
You might find a Pentium 4 D (Dual Core) that fits the same socket, or a Hyper Threading variant which treats one core as two.
Alternatively, there could be a faster P4 chip available for this board.
If the CPU gets too hot, it could be because of dust or debris in the heat sink and fan.
(Added) K does not indicate overclockability, unlike today's Intel processors.

Throttlestop software may enable overclocking of unlocked CPUs in Windows. An older version such as Throttlestop 6.0 would work better for this. Some P4 models can be upgraded to Core2Duo with a newer BIOS, though many cannot. This depends on the chipset and manufacturer support. If an update is possible, Core 2 Extreme can run and overclock like the Dimension E520 in my case. However, even overclocked P4s will struggle to match the slowest Core2Duo. The P4 Extremes have EE (Extreme Edition) part numbers. If you can upgrade to any Core 2 Duo, it would be beneficial, and the X6800 is an unlocked CPU option. Dual-core Pentium D is another possibility, but results remain limited unless you can switch to Core2 technology.
