Hey everyone. I'm looking to get the most performance from this Dell system, focusing on the best CPU and RAM options available. Updated September 25, 2022 by enzoray

You could likely switch to an i7-7700 (make sure to verify which CPUs were originally compatible) and as many RAM DIMMs as fit within the supported limits—remember, for a standard setup it's usually safe to stay around 16GB or less since your hardware is older and based on proprietary components.

Many Dells models exist, and without the precise specification, it's hard to determine their full potential. For instance, a 7700 looks nice, but pairing it with an SFF Optiplex that uses a 180W power supply and a cooling setup built for just two low-clocked cores isn't ideal.

Basically this has a nvme hd. i wanted to max it out and turn it into a NAS or having a small factor pc that potentially can be powerful enough to do some video editing with a decent gpu. the only concern is the power supply.

It has a 180W power supply, which isn't ideal for heavy use. I wouldn't invest in an i7 unless you're planning to use it as a NAS. Opt for an i5 7400 or similar, and add a budget 2x8GB RAM setup so you have extra memory. That's the best approach.

We’re using a few of the latest models at the office, specifically the DELL OptiPlex 3050. The i7-7700 should perform well. For memory, 16GB with two DIMM slots is sufficient; we might go up to 32GB since our machines already have 16GB. With the 180W power supply, we’re limited to low-power, compact graphics cards. We rely on the built-in integrated graphics for tasks like software development and operating x-ray testing equipment. The other systems run on 80-thread servers with 256GB RAM for heavy workloads.
