I own a MSI B450 Tomahawk with a Ryzen 5 3600 processor. My BIOS version is E7C02AMS.1C0. I've already tried using M flash. I bought a USB 2.0 Memorex drive that was already formatted to FAT32. I downloaded the 7C02v1I BIOS from msi.com and extracted it onto my flash drive. I didn't label it anything else. After launching BIOS and selecting M flash, the screen went black. I reset the CMOS and everything seems normal now. It appears my BIOS is quite old—possibly a 2019 release, maybe CSM. Someone on Reddit suggested updating to UEFI before attempting a BIOS update. This process has been really stressful because most people I talk to seem to have similar issues. I'm trying to upgrade to support the Ryzen 7 5800X3D I just purchased. This is my first BIOS update, and I'm very anxious about making mistakes. Someone mentioned that M flash doesn't work with DisplayPort? I have an HDMI monitor, but I'm hoping to connect it via HDMI instead of using M flash. Or should I switch to UEFI first? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just want to get this resolved without any more complications.

Your motherboard features a Flash BIOS Button enabling updates without accessing BIOS or the OS. Simply plug the USB storage with the BIOS file into the USB port, press the button for three seconds, and the update proceeds automatically.

I've checked your approach and reviewed the research you've done. It seems best to proceed without using a CPU, RAM, or GPU at the moment. This aligns with what I found. Would you like me to confirm if renaming the file according to your manual is necessary?

Your initial release likely came from the beta in September 2019. I recommend using the 7C02v34 version released on October 25, 2019, which appears to be a significant update, bringing you to the comboPi package 1.0.0.4. If that works, opt for larger versions that support comboPi updates, such as 7C02v39 - 1.1.0.0 or 7C02v3A - 1.2.0.0. For the final step, ensure your USB stick is formatted with fat32 and connected to a USB 2.0 port, even if you're using a USB 3.0 device. Avoid rushing for high speeds during the flashing process when working with a 32 MB BIOS.

The 7C02v3F isn't listed on the boards site. You may need to download it from another source. Let me know if you'd like help finding it.

The image displays your board model MS-7C02 - MSI guiding me to the B450 Tomohawk Max version. It works with both B450 Tomohawk and B450 Tomohawk MAX boards; the key distinction lies in the MAX model featuring a 32 MB BIOS chip (256 mbit) versus the B450 Tomohawk which uses a 16 MB BIOS chip (128 mbit). On the B450 Tomohawk page, the BIOS sizes typically range between 9-11.5 MB compressed. Determine your board’s BIOS size, then apply the same reasoning. If unsure, HWInfo64 might assist you. For instance, on my work machine, the BIOS section lists a size of 6.1 MB, suggesting a likely 8 MB (64 mbit) or possibly 16 MB (128 mbit) chip.

You're checking if it requires the BIOS 7C02v1l. Let me clarify that for you.

It seems you're using the standard non-max version. Sorry for the mix-up. The file you download will have a .1C0 extension. There are only three recent BIOS updates: 7C02v1D (2019-11-11), 7C02v1E (2020-06-12), and 7C02v1I (2022-08-15). Unzip the USB in the root folder, connect a USB 3.0 port (or use UBS 2.0 if needed), go to BIOS and choose update from page 37 in the manual. It should work as long as the CPU is installed in the socket—no need to remove the cooler or CPU. The USB stick must be placed in the correct port for this method.
