I've managed to acquire an old Core 2 Duo Dell Optiplex 780 and intend to install XP SP3 on it. Yes, I understand XP is no longer supported and won’t connect to any network. My goal is to play classic games that don't work well with newer Windows versions—Dune 2000, older command & conquer titles, mid-to-late nineties games, and some DOS-based programs. I'm curious whether XP will run these smoothly or not.

Windows XP doesn't support running DOS games directly from an NT-based system. The difference in architecture makes it incompatible.

It depends on the game; some older titles run smoothly in DOSBox while others may need adjustments for XP compatibility.

XP offers limited DOS compatibility with a simplified version that supports certain games, though most older Windows and DOS titles won’t function properly.

I recently set up Windows 2000 in a virtual machine to run an older 16-bit game called Castle of the Winds—which wouldn’t start on Windows 10. So far, I haven’t tried any DOS titles, though I’m not sure. I considered using Windows 95 or 98, but I aimed for more reliable performance than those earlier versions were known for.
