I'm thinking about upgrading to an RX 480 with 8GB RAM in the near future. I want to enjoy Fallout 4 at medium to high settings in 1080p or 720p. Since I don't have funds for a new CPU, I need to be realistic about what my current build can handle. The system already has a GPU and other components, but I should keep that in mind when planning the upgrade.

Yes, Fallout 4 runs smoothly at maximum settings 1080p with 60 frames per second on an R9 280X. The RX 480 performs better than the R9 390, confirming it definitely works!

All configurations are set high, but you need to maintain a close shadow distance due to the CPU limitations.

The impact of shadow distance is significant.

I'm experiencing issues maintaining a stable 60 FPS on my setup. It seems the distance between the display and the GPU might be straining the CPU, especially with the FX-8350 handling the graphics. Since you've been adjusting settings recently, it's possible the changes aren't optimizing performance enough.

It doesn't appear Fallout includes crossfire mechanics, so it typically relies on a single card.

Shadows demand significant processing power, making shadow rendering challenging beyond standard GPU capabilities. The CPU must handle this workload to maintain smooth performance, and reducing the intensity eases pressure on the processor.

I rely on AMD's Fallout 4 Crossfire setting in Crimson. When I run the game, both cards increase their speed to 1050MHz and maintain comparable GPU demands. Unless another factor is at play, Fallout 4 indeed accommodates Crossfire.

It seems the CPU might be the issue, as GPU usage stays low most of the time. I’ll test reducing shadow settings tonight to check for improvement.
