Can the Optiplex 980 be overclocked?
My concern is that the Optiplex 980 presents a challenge for anyone trying to overclock it because of its Phoenix BIOS. I own the biggest model and have adequate cooling; even under heavy load, the CPU stays around 60 degrees Celsius (with an i7 870). My system also uses a rewired power supply to bypass the original low-wattage PSU and the proprietary 24 connector. The main issue still is whether there’s a way to overcome this overclocking difficulty while all other problems are resolved except for the BIOS.
The BIOS may limit your progress and any software attempts to overclock can cause system failure, mainly because the VRM isn't suitable for mild overclocking. The solution is no or proceed with caution. You should adjust settings in the BIOS rather than through software, allowing you to return to defaults. This approach has been used before and remains the recommended method.
