I'm just starting out with computer gaming. I have a gigabyte moba (ga78lmt), an amd fx 4300, and an msi radeon r7 370. Recently, I bought a z97 gaming 5 mobo and an intel i5 4430. I keep hearing about overclocking but don’t really understand what it means. It sounds like making the processor run faster than its default speed. Anyone who can explain this would be really helpful, thank you!

Your new i5 4430 is not overclockable, sorry. It's already locked. If you want a CPU that supports overclocking, consider an Intel model with a K at the end, such as i5-6600K. The K indicates it's unlocked for overclocking purposes.

In general, overclocking simply increases the base clock speed of the CPU beyond its standard setting. This can theoretically boost performance, allowing your PC to handle more tasks in the same or less time. However, using a suitable CPU for this purpose won't double power output or provide an extraordinary performance jump. The main benefit lies in the noticeable improvement. You'll need to invest more in a high-quality cooler to maintain optimal temperatures, as overclocking can significantly raise CPU temperatures, potentially causing damage if cooling isn't adequate.

Typically, third-party software with an easy-to-use interface is used for overclocking, or the BIOS may offer options. For more advanced settings, you'll need to explore online tutorials and watch YouTube videos. Even though it's not overly complicated, incorrect adjustments can permanently harm your CPU.

Peace
