Hello, I hope someone can assist me. I'm trying to find a replacement laptop since my resurrected ASUS laptop with RTX 3080 keeps overheating during Last of Us 2. I have an all-AMD setup for my desktop—Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RX 9070XT—and it's functioning fine. However, I'll be traveling for the next three months, and my old ASUS (purchased back in 2023) is now outdated or no longer works properly (I already spent £300 replacing the motherboard with a used one because of overheating). Even with a cooler or a fan, it stays over 90 degrees when playing Last of Us 2. That's why I'm considering a desktop build instead.

But since this trip could last longer than three months, I was thinking about getting a laptop with a similar setup to my desktop. Unfortunately, no laptop version of the RX 9070 XT GPU is available yet. After spending a whole day yesterday searching online for something comparable, I'm still a bit unsure. I would really appreciate any advice from experienced gamers or AMD users who can recommend a laptop with a setup similar to mine, preferably better.

I must admit, I generally avoid Intel CPUs and the RTX 5090. My budget is capped at £3,000. Thank you very much for your help.

Regards,
Alex

I am searching for a suitable replacement laptop for my resurrected ASUS model equipped with RTX 3080, which is frequently overheating during Last of Us 2 playback.
Could you provide the exact model and SKU for your ASUS laptop? Have you considered undervolting the CPU and GPU? Also, have you re-applied the thermal paste and pads using a higher-quality material? While the device is being taken apart, check if the cooling vents in the cooling solution are blocked by dust or debris.

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for the delayed answer because of a recent family situation. To address your queries:
1. I didn’t perform any undervolting since I’m unfamiliar with that process.
2. Yes, I cleaned and applied fresh thermal paste. I’m using Grizzly one (I avoid liquid metal types as they’re unsuitable for laptops). When I received my laptop, I discovered the repair shop used a standard product, which felt quite solid—so I replaced it with Grizzly’s thermal paste. The temperature improved slightly, but maintaining around 60°C required my laptop cooler to spin at over 1,200 RPM. Nevertheless, during gameplay of Last of Us 2, the temperature still climbed past 80°C. The repair helped restore functionality, though the elevated heat means I’ll need to carry a cooling solution with me when traveling... which explains why I’m seeking recommendations for more appropriate laptops.
4. Yes, I removed all dust and debris that blocked the vents and fans, including the actual ones (two). After replacing the thermal paste and clearing the buildup, the laptop started up normally and operated at an average temperature of 50 to 60°C. However, once I began playing Last of Us and engaged in combat, the temperature rose to over 80°C. It was after about an hour of gameplay that I noticed it reaching 91°C, prompting me to look for a more suitable device.
5. The GPU performance is decent—RTX 3080 is a solid choice for a laptop with limited airflow—but the restricted cooling system puts it behind current standards. I was hoping to take advantage of the Black Friday sale to acquire a newer model with improved thermal management. As I mentioned earlier, I’m very pleased with the RX9070XT GPU’s performance on my desktop.
But there’s no comparable option for laptops, so by sharing this, I hope someone can suggest suitable recent models.

Based on the silence, it seems I need to adjust my target, perhaps opting for something more costly. I’m considering either the Lenovo Gen 10 or Alienware 18 area 51, both equipped with RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 graphics. The reason for this shift is they are significantly pricier yet offer better longevity. Unlike my present setup, which is always under strain even during a game like The Last of Us 2...

I’ve missed the Black Friday promotions since I’m still overseas. However, the current memory prices are insane—over £1,000 for a pair of 32Gb DDR5 memory sticks is really tough to handle.
