I own a great computer at home, but my school laptop isn't working well. Can I connect my home PC to the internet from school so I can use it? Some people say it's dangerous and I want to make sure I stay safe too. Also, I don't want to pay any money for this.

It could go even slower because there is too much extra work when doing things remotely. If something takes a lot of CPU power or uses your video card to encode on the remote computer, then everything actually runs on your home PC. So if you compile big programs or run a video transcode, it will work well. But surfing the web will be way slower, and anything with lots of interaction might feel much sluggish compared to doing things right here at home. You could try using TeamViewer for remote access, but I strongly suspect it won't do what people expect from it.

What exactly do you want me to turn it on for? Just turning something off from a distance isn't enough. I don't think that works well either.

It's possible to use your computer from home while it's already turned on, using different methods to do so. "Using" might mean the most important part...

Work feels hard because I have to write files and do normal web tasks. My computer is too slow for everything I need.

It might be even slower there is a lot of overhead in running it remotely. If you were say doing something very cpu intensive or maybe something that uses the video card to do encoding on the remote pc. In effect you are using the remote connection to click start and then everything runs on the home pc. Compile a large program or run a video transcode would work. Surfing the web is going to be much slower. If you want a lot of interaction it will likely be much slower that running things directly. You can look at using teamviewer to get the remote access but I strongly suspect it is not going to do what you think it is.

Okay thanks, I think I'm going to wait a bit before getting started on that.

Try out Parsec, it is free and works very well. People use it for games and 3D CAD work from home: https://parsec.app/ The input lag is a bit high when using this remotely, so I wouldn't play fast or intense FPS games. Slower adventure and campaign games will be fine. They also have a remote wifi switch that you can integrate with Amazon Alexa or Google Home to turn on the computer while at school. It costs less than $20 but it is not free: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084WWC9NS

If you need to reach your computer from another place, Team Viewer is a good choice because it doesn't cost money when used for personal stuff. I've used this tool all along just to get things done remotely. Just remember that if you don't have the special "wake on LAN" switch turned on, your PC needs to be already running before anyone can connect to it.

Be careful...you haven't said that yet, and I'm not guessing you want to do it. If Team Viewer sees you moving copyrighted stuff around their site, they'll turn you off right then in a New York minute. Like if you link your own music or movies over there and transfer them, they can/will shut you down.
