It will operate as expected, but in flex mode rather than the standard dual-channel setup. This means once you utilize the first 16GB from your two 16GB sticks in dual-channel mode, data will be transferred at single-channel speeds from the third stick.

Currently I have two 8GB sticks, but I need a single 16GB stick. I want to install it in slots 2 and 4, while the existing sticks stay in slots 3.

It would allow for 16gb at dual channel speeds followed by an additional 16gb at single channel speeds. I believe. Previously, adding a third stick would force everything into single channel, regardless of the amount of memory used. I’m not very familiar with flex mode, but it seems intriguing. From what I understand, if you’re not relying on the second 16gb (except for certain applications), performance would remain similar to dual channel. I’m not sure what the constraints of this mode are, but there might be some.

It might have been the first to use it or the first to invent it. By now, it seems like it’s likely common among systems.

I’m curious though—could it indicate that some users are running systems they believe are dual-channel but are actually flexing? If two RAM sticks behave differently than expected, the system would still function but operate more slowly. I wonder if there’s a BIOS indicator that reveals the memory type or mode.
