Good night. I recently bought a used laptop with an MX150 graphics card and an i7 8550u processor. My main job is playing light games and doing some simple 3D stuff. But since the graphics card has potential, I decided to try more demanding games too. Before that, I asked the previous owner to run a benchmark test, and they both had pretty good performance with their CPU and GPU.

The laptop is a Lenovo 330, but it doesn't have great cooling. However, by cleaning up the thermal paste and lowering the processor speed slightly (called an undervolt), I got better heat control than usual. Anyway, I tried to play Nier Automata, which is very hard on the graphics card. At 720p resolution, the game ran between 40 and 50 frames per second, and there was no problem with playing it. At 900p, it averaged around 40 fps, but small stutters happened a little bit.

Since there is very little performance left to go on, I think lowering the graphics card speed can fix this issue by dropping the temperature and making things more stable. Maybe even increasing the refresh rate (100hz) with a small undervolt would help too. What about upgrading the video memory? Do you think that would make a difference here? Or maybe I shouldn't try anything at all and just stick to 720p mode for now?

By the way, my i7 processor outperforms by more than 80% (average score is 63) on user benchmark tests, while my graphics card scores only about 14.8% higher on average. Does that mean a difference in performance? Thanks for any help!

Is stuttering because of heat going down? Yes, then don't worry much about under-volting it. You might get a little faster or slower by that change, but I think changing 1 to 2 frames per second won't really matter if the game is playing smoothly after you do it.

Yes, when I runned an exclusive GPU bench test, the temperature would repeatedly reach 67oC and quickly drop to 63, producing"waves" on the graph. The CPU was throttling too, but after I disabled the turbo it ceased to throttle. Now there are just a few lags and I think the GPU is the responsible. The problem is that I don't think I can get less than 67oC max just with undervolting,.I wouldn't mind lose fps in order to end this stutterings, although I am already satisfied with the performance.
