Do video games with a 4K resolution present an immersive experience that mirrors reality convincingly? If not, would resolutions like 5K or 8K be necessary for truly realistic gameplay? And how long must we anticipate waiting before these higher-resolution gaming options become widely available?

It’s frequently my opinion that higher resolutions, like 1440 or 4K, can appear less convincing due to the more pronounced visibility of imperfections. This largely depends on the specific game; particularly with older titles. Recently, I played Knights of the Old Republic 2, which was recently updated for 16:9 support at 1440p, and it dramatically highlighted the quality of the original in-game textures. The textures themselves were generally below 1080p resolution, appearing noticeably subpar on a 1440p display. I would personally prefer to play it on a standard 4:3 monitor if one were available.

Higher detail levels won’t enhance the sense of realism in my view; they simply create a clearer image. They will undoubtedly improve the visual quality, however, without adding to the authenticity.

Visual fidelity isn’t determined by resolution, but rather by a developer’s capacity to convincingly persuade the player of its authenticity. A skillfully crafted game at 720p can feel more genuine than a poorly executed one in 4K.

I agree that you’re overemphasizing resolution. As previously stated, visual realism isn't solely dictated by pixel count. Fortnite will inherently remain unrealistic, irrespective of its display quality.

It seems to me that resolutions like 1440 or 4K can appear less realistic due to their increased ability to reveal imperfections.

Occasionally, higher resolutions like 1440 or 4K can appear less convincing due to the increased visibility of imperfections. This largely depends on the specific game; particularly with older titles. Recently, I played Knights of the Old Republic 2, which was recently updated for 16:9 support at 1440p, and it dramatically highlighted the limitations of its original in-game textures. These textures were originally designed at a native resolution below 1080p, appearing noticeably subpar on a 1440p display. I would personally prefer to play it on a standard 4:3 monitor if one were available.

Considering increased screen resolutions enables developers to depict facial details like nose hair and blemishes, potentially enhancing realism. Furthermore, should I invest in an Atmos audio system for my gaming setup?

Regarding visual fidelity:

I believe high-resolution displays enable developers to depict facial details like nasal hair and blemishes, potentially enhancing realism.

Is a surround sound system—specifically Atmos—a worthwhile addition to my gaming setup?

*Quake I*, released in 1996, possessed sufficient realism to elicit a sense of unease.

This was due to its compelling narrative combined with impactful audio design.

A weak plot paired with excessive graphics remains a subpar experience.

Furthermore, approaching "true" realism can lead to the uncanny valley effect. Although not genuinely human, your mind attempts to perceive it as such, diverting cognitive resources from the core story.
