Calling upon the pilots of BF4!
I rely on standard default settings for operating all vehicles, and I believe I outperform most pilots except for the one who uses the middle mouse to switch between weapons. Just keep practicing!
I rely solely on the mouse and keyboard since I don’t have a controller. Previously, I played BF3 on PS3 and found it straightforward. Through practice, I improved significantly and now handle dog fights with ease. I believe I’m a more skilled helicopter pilot. For clarity, I use the right mouse button to scan sideways without altering the direction of the helicopter or jet for a clearer perspective.
I've tested a typical X360 controller for about 5 to 600 hours of jet/chopper time across BF3 and BF4. It clearly provides some benefits. You should experiment with different key layouts—here’s an example: JETS; (feel free to share your own if you like). Left stick = Roll/Pitch Right stick = Yaw Left Trigger = Brake Right Trigger = Throttle Left Shoulder = Countermeasure Right Shoulder = Fire A - Afterburner B - Spot X - Reload Y - Switch Weapon Back/Select - Scoreboard D-Pad Up - Enter/Exit Vehicle D-Pad Left - Full Map D-Pad Right - Zoom Mini-map D-Pad Down - Change camera angle. It won’t be perfect overnight, but it feels more intuitive than using a mouse and keyboard.
I operate solely with the keyboard to control the chopper and jet, (azerty) z qsd and arrow keys. The flight performs well, though my poor keyboard struggles to detect more than four keys simultaneously (Microsoft KB). To excel in a jet, you must invest significant time in it. Good luck!
Keep practicing a lot. I use the regular mouse and keyboard with "pitch up" tied to space. My sensitivity (DPI) is set on the mouse wheel for maximum speed while flying. Try shooting in third person in jets—it’s much simpler. Practice on CTE servers because they’ve made big changes to flying mechanics, giving you an edge if you learn before others. Good luck!
