Cache drive for laptop storage
Cache drive for laptop storage
Hi there, I just updated my ASUS k551l and noticed boot time has increased a lot—about 45 to 60 seconds now. When I first got it, it started up in under 15 seconds. I have a 500GB hard drive and a 24GB SSD. After looking online, I think the SSD is meant to act as a cache. I’m not sure if the slower boot is because the reformat didn’t install the necessary drivers for using the SSD as a cache. Could there be a way to verify that? Also, if I need to reinstall the drivers to make the SSD work as a cache, do I have to change anything in BIOS? I’ve heard about RAID changes but I’m not familiar with BIOS settings. Thanks so much for your help!

It likely contained Windows installed for booting, possibly using a standard version, while another drive held the remaining operating system.
Looking into it, it was intended as a cache drive but you might want to use it as a boot drive instead. You could adjust motherboard settings or check Windows options. The guide I found could be useful: https://www.pcworld.com/article/248828/h...ology.html
Doing a boot drive that small will be tedious. My sister has a pair of Dell netbooks that she doesn't use at all due to a small boot drive, probably 24g. Problem with them though is the spot for a 2.5" drive is there but no connections. I haven't been able to find a good solution to it so they're useless.
he already has a 500gig setup, the cache could boost general speed but a quicker start is what’s needed. If it’s the same storage device, he might need to rely on the cache instead of booting directly from the SSD, as cache drives tend to perform better over time.
You'll enjoy reading it during lunch breaks and at work now, hehe.
