Hello, I moved into a new apartment and the internet was already ready by the owner. I saw an Ethernet cable on the wall linked to the router-only device's wan port. In my old homes I used DSL or fiber cables. I plan to connect my laptop directly to that wall cable to see if it connects to the internet or gets a local IP address (likely not). There might be a modem inside the wall doing that. Any hints?

Inquire with the landlord or ISP about the network configuration. Ask how the router or modem is set up and what method they use to obtain its IP address.

The setup is solely a router configuration. The Ethernet cable on the wall links to the device's wan port. I can't modify the router settings to learn its operation. The default password isn't used, and the ISP agreement restricts any changes to their equipment. My interest was just to explore how it functions.

It connects your laptop to the available port and establishes a link. It may receive an IP address automatically. To get more details, you could monitor the traffic using a packet capture tool, though this won't necessarily change how it functions with your ISP or landlord.

Run a traceroute to see the path and count internal IPs. Determine whether your internet comes from your landlord or an ISP—this affects your connection setup.
