You need to purchase a game package to play Star Citizen at the moment. There are no alternative options available. The packages include ships, but you can obtain ships without buying a package right now—though this was only possible during the final release. The game is free-to-play.

I think you’ll need to purchase the game. Otherwise, they’d have to use microtransactions to make it profitable. Somewhere, there must be a way to earn money from it.

Purchase a bundle along with an arena commander pass, allowing access to ships in the game. You can choose to acquire them all at once or build up gradually. Payment isn't free, but small purchases will become optional and not essential.

Upon release, you'll need to purchase the game for $50-60, with in-game purchases covering costs. It won't have a subscription fee, much like Guild Wars 2.

It functions much like Guild Wars 2 does. After launching, you’ll be able to purchase it at a fixed price. With that first payment you receive a starter ship to begin your journey. Once active in the game, you can earn in-game currency and purchase additional ships without further cost. There might be small transactions, but they usually involve only cosmetic items like skins or aquarium decorations. If you choose to support the game now, you have choices: opt for a starter package using game currency or upgrade to a more advanced ship. If you wish to play in the alpha—currently limited to the Arena Commander module—you’ll need to purchase an alpha pass. Let me know if this clarifies anything!

So, say, I just buy a game package right now, will I still have access to the game when it comes out? I may just want to buy it for cheap right now ($30) and then use my ship when the game fully comes out. Speaking of which, if I buy just a game package, will I have access to the full game when it comes out?

Purchasing a bundle grants immediate full game access ("Squadron 42 Digital Download"/"Star Citizen Digital Download") along with beta inclusion, eliminating the need for ongoing subscriptions. To obtain alpha access, additional module passes such as arena commander must be bought separately, since early slots are already filled unless the package contains them.

The correct info is in the package details—digital download, squadron 42, and more. It's the game on release. The best price right now is $40-45, and you also get Arena Commander. I'm on the phone, so I can't share a direct link yet.
