Hello everyone, I’m renting a friend’s basement and our existing Wi-Fi setup uses a combo modem-router on the second floor. We can’t place it on the main floor because only one device can use the 2.4GHz band at the same time, even for light tasks. With two people in the house, splitting between 2.4 and 5GHz isn’t ideal. I’m pretty sure the issue lies with the ISP’s combo modem-router. I’ve adjusted its settings several times without improvement. I’m now seeking suggestions for a standalone router priced between $100 and $200 CAD.
I’d likely suggest the Asus RT-AC68U—it’s on the higher side but offers good value based on what I’ve heard, and it supports AiMesh (as shown here), which could help you add more APs later. It performs reasonably well in NewEgg right now. On the other hand, a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900/AC2300 also fits your budget and is a solid option. Best of luck with your search!
You might also reach out to your ISP and express your concerns. They could either supply you with an updated gateway device or at the very least, fix the existing one. It’s possible the equipment is faulty. I’d suggest trying this approach first rather than investing in a new router.
I tested it using my own modem-router, which matches the ISP model.
