I noticed several people discussing this problem, but they were using pre-made parts. All my components are brand new, here’s the latest build... AMD Ryzen 9 3900x (Wraith Prism Default Cooler) Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero X570 RAM: G.Skill DDR4-3600 CL16 64gb (G.SKILL Trident Z Neo for AMD Ryzen Series 64GB) GPU: EVGA 2080 Power Supply: EVGA 1000W Case: Lian Li PC-O11DW 011 Dynamic Case with 3 bottom intakes, 3 side intakes, and 3 top exhausts AMD Ryzen Master stats... Temperature: 70°C peak speed: 4.312 MHz PPT: 38% CPU Power: 30.197 W SOC Power: 13.7 W TDC (CPU) 23% EDC (CPU) 25% The CPU is always just idling around 70°C peak speed, about 4.25... I’d really like to lower that temperature. From many YouTube videos and articles online, I thought the standard Wraith Prism cooler for AMD would work just fine.
I refreshed the thermal paste (Artic Silver 4) and it appears to be improving slightly, but performance remains limited when Chrome or other apps are open—only about 30% utilization and temperatures still near 72°C. AMD devices tend to run hotter by design. There’s no straightforward way to bring it down to around 65°C or lower without significant adjustments.
Relies on the benchmark used for comparison, my previous i5 stayed under 60 with a high-end cooler, while ryzen models tend to overheat (though they offer more processing power). For the 3900x I wouldn’t suggest the original cooler—I prefer a dark rock pro 4 and find temperatures still fairly high, though performance remains solid and it’s much quieter. The stock cooler matches what’s used for the 3700x, but there are reports it struggles with the 3700x even under heavy load, let alone the 3900x at full speed for long periods.
AIO air performs slightly better than the top-end options, reducing temperature by just a few degrees. There are many videos and reviews discussing this. Remember that with my dark rock pro running at 72°C under full load (like continuous looping), idle temps sit around 40-45°C depending on surroundings. For regular use—especially video editing—it stays well below about 60°C. The 12°C 24t chip on a 7nm package generates a lot of heat, which is typical and not a cause for concern.
