He bought components without my advice and asked me to put everything together. This was only my third PC build attempt. First mistake: no power-on sequence, but some progress after reseating the CPU. Second attempt: finally added RGB, but still nothing happened. Checked all connections carefully, confirmed everything was correct, then turned off the system. Called a technician who told me I shouldn’t have connected both 4+4 pins. He said the GPU might be salvageable. His explanation didn’t quite match what I experienced. I assumed an 8+4 pin setup meant only one extra pin should be used for overclocking, but it seems there was confusion. Parts list below: R5 2600 MSI GTX 1650 (second-hand but still decent), MSI B450 MOBO 16GB 3200mhz RAM, 700w memory, unknown brand (possibly not 80+ bronze certified), 1TB WD BLUE SSD (brand forgotten, likely not common), and a 4TB PSU.
I understand boggy77's point. You received what you expected from the PSU.
I shared the same opinion with both of you, just like I told my friend. However, the technician said the PSU was "okay" and wasn't responsible for the issue. He insisted on using only the 4-pin connector and not the 4+4 one.
the technician seems uncertain about his expertise. the need for a second connector arises when your CPU requires more power than one connection can supply, allowing it to draw from both. however, if your system stays within the capacity of a single connector—unless you're using extreme conditions like liquid nitrogen—then the additional one is unnecessary. i’ve connected the second one and it’s operating well below the primary connector’s limits, and i’m using air cooling. so even though the secondary is designed for overclockers, it shouldn’t damage your board if you connect it properly.
If it's defective and sends incorrect voltage through the wire, it might damage everything as soon as you turn the switch on.
Using poorly constructed or outdated power supplies can cause frequent failures. They generate large voltage surges that can damage your computer and ruin all equipment.
