You're evaluating CPU options for 3D modeling and VFX. The 3950x and 3960x are both good choices, but performance differences are minimal. Consider your current workload and future needs when deciding. Adding a GPU later could also be beneficial. Let me know if you need more details!

The Threadripper compatibility: Increased memory capacity, quicker performance (quad channel), 64-core processor for upcoming upgrades. Additional PCIe lanes available. If this matters to you, choose the 3960x model. Otherwise, go with the 3950x.

Do you think your choice is based on the graphics card? Also, with the 3950x you get a higher turbo frequency, which means less heat buildup, while the 3960x offers more cores than the 3950x.

the variation you see matches what you'd anticipate for 16 to 24 cores, resulting in roughly half performance under multithreaded conditions.

It depends on how much extra expansion you need. You have an AM4 and a TRX40 slot.

Intel should only be thought about in this area if you require HEDT and have limited funds, but even then AMD’s 3900X and 3950X models are very attractive choices.
