Build AdviceRyzen 7000
Hi Everyone,
After a long time away, I'm slowly getting back into gaming and computer use. Right now I own an Intel Coffee Lake I5 and a GTX 1070. I'm considering building a new gaming setup and thinking about switching to an AMD Ryzen. I remember AMD was doing well for their price, so I'm wondering if it's still true today? My main question is whether the Ryzen 7700X with eight cores and 16 threads would be enough for gaming. Money is tight right now, so I'm unsure if I could afford a Ryzen 9. Also, since I've been out of the loop for a while, do you think overclocking is still worth it? From what I recall, overclocking used to matter because Intel and AMD were delivering strong performance, but it didn't seem necessary unless you had extreme cooling solutions.
This guide explains how to request new build or upgrade suggestions. It's an adaptation of another post about asking for advice on building a new setup. Many people are seeking upgrade tips, both here and in CPU forums, so I thought it would be useful to share this information.
At any price point, you will find that the performance of amd or intel will be comparable, and a big boost over your 8600K. Chips are binned today so there is no point in overclocking. The automatic turbo boost will exceed all core overclocks. ditto on graphics, Here is tom's gpu hierarchy chart: I suggest builders stick with what they know on cpu or graphics. There is a learning curve. In particular, ryzen is picky about ram.
With the upgrade, perhaps you can wait until Zen 5 comes out with fresh mobos?
Saving up could make the new tech worthwhile.
If it's purely for gaming, the 7800X3D is more than sufficient. A Ryzen 9 CPU isn't necessary.
The benefit of using a Ryzen now is that it offers an upgradeable system.
On the other hand, you can install a budget-friendly Z690 board like the Z690 extreme:

Reuse the RAM and install a 14700k with USB BIOS flash.
This leaves you more space for a stronger GPU.
All decisions are yours.
