I think the idea from Linus’s videos is accurate—refurbished server components can work well for media server setups. There are indeed eBay sellers who offer assembly and build services for you. If you’re interested, let me know and I can find some recommendations.
They don’t offer these services because they aren’t cost-effective. You might actually pay more for labor than buying a brand-new Synology NAS. But eBay is packed with used server components, making it easy to assemble almost any machine at a lower price.
