Original OS version: Was it an OEM release (installed by manufacturer) or a full retail purchase? It was pre-installed. System age: Hardware age 1 year and 3 months. OS installation time: March 11th of this year. CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon Graphics @ 2.90 GHz. Video card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. Motherboard: (laptop only) Power Supply details not needed if it's a laptop. Manufacturer: ASUS. Exact model: ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506IV_FA506IV – Laptop.
Issue: Experienced frequent crashes, especially in VR mode. Multiple failures, often with error codes like "irql_not_less_or_equal", "kmode_exception_not_handled", or "system_service_exception". Occasionally a blue screen appears without clear reason. Sometimes manual troubleshooting helps, but no definitive fix found.
Current thoughts: Considering replacement due to excessive failures and doubts about VR readiness. Feeling frustrated after spending $1200 for what seems not to be VR-optimized. Planning to document the problem with recent crashes and a previous failure before deciding on disposal or upgrade.
A: I'm using the Oculus Rift CV1 with the Oculus Software.
B: That's not what I expected. When I launch VR, SteamVR boots up first and I often use the space calibrator for tracking.
C: No, I don't think so. Also, I didn't realize I needed to add another setting that causes crashes on startup, but it happens every time.
If that’s the only thing you can run, it might just be that. Your setup could be inherently unstable. Unless there’s an extreme overclock causing issues, the first two components to check are likely memory and power supply unit. Memory is relatively straightforward to verify. The Microsoft memory tester is well-known for its shortcomings, making memtest86+ a solid starting point. It can produce false negatives, but they’re rare. The gold standard test is more time-consuming than memtest86+, but it’s the most reliable method—requiring multiple RAM modules and assuming bad memory is extremely uncommon. Try using just one RAM stick (it will run very slowly) and observe for crashes. Then add the other stick. If crashes disappear when you remove a stick, that one is faulty. If both work after replacement, the problem lies elsewhere.
Well, this is a laptop, and I just got two new sticks of 8GB Kingston RAM, so I doubt it could be that. I don't even know what else is causing it. Sometimes it's IRQL all the time. Does it identify my headset's version and pretty much just crashes over that? I was gonna roll back the BIOS to where it never crashed at all, but really I just wanna sell this laptop and buy a newer one. It's exactly like this one, but it has a nvidia and intel core in it, so I don't know if that's better than what I have. As for the power, it's using a 100~240V input/19.5v=11.8A 230w power brick.

Nicht jede Korruption muss gefunden werden; manchmal reicht ein vollständiger Neuschreiben. Konflikte können ärgerlicher sein, wenn man nicht einfach alles löschen möchte, was oft den Zweck des Systems untergräbt. Wenn es sich um einen Konflikt handelt, ist das Problem meistens schon nach dem Laden eines Elements aufgetreten – auch Korruptionen können dazu führen. Speicherfehler treten zufällig auf, aber manchmal folgen sie einem bestimmten Muster. Kosmische Strahlen oder ähnliche Einflüsse könnten dafür verantwortlich sein. Beschädigte Speicherbereiche funktionieren normal, bis sie auf den betroffenen Punkt zugreifen, woraufhin Blue-Screens auftreten. Wenn der Speicherplatz hoch im Adressstapel steht und man ihn selten nutzt, werden solche Fehler möglicherweise nie bemerkt. Hardware seems to matter more than software, especially CPU memory. Usually when a machine stops responding it’s due to bios or Windows issues, not just the processor. The feeling is that everything functions normally until you attempt something specific. Possibly overheating is the cause. Check if temperatures are high—you might verify the hardware by booting from a live CD on a USB drive. If it crashes then it points to hardware problems beyond just the drive. Since it’s an APU, you could test GPU memory by disconnecting the video card and see if the issue resolves. AGPs rely on CPU memory.
Typically I play Beat Saber or VRChat, but Nvidia’s temp caps at 86°C while AMD is close at about 79°C. Even with extra cooling, it doesn’t stay cool enough. Some say these ASUS TUF laptops have bad cooling because the bottom case blocks airflow. Last time it crashed while I was just watching videos and it froze out completely. It’s happened twice this week, so it seems the hardware is failing. I can’t remove the graphics card—it’s built into the laptop. Everything seems connected unless you’re looking at it wrong.
