I'm sorry for the confusion, but a power surge can really damage everything. The VRM doesn't safeguard the CPU against such surges, unfortunately. It depends on the board having adequate protection.

The board wasn’t costly, which makes me question if it had safeguards. It looks like an older design, and the previous model doesn’t have a label—just a label reading H61FEL-U.
